SPIRIT ANIMAL MOSAIC (ages 13-17) with Amy Bruckner

Native American beliefs embrace the idea of animal guides with one totem animal that acts as the main guardian spirit.  With this one animal a connection is shared, either through interest in the animal, characteristics, dreams, or other interaction. This animal guide offers power and wisdom to the individual when he or she conveys their respect and trust and are open to learning its lessons.  This class will help students identify their spirit animal guide through a series of questions, and then design and create a mosaic with vitreous glass that honors their spirit animal.  No previous mosaic experience necessary.  There is a $10 material fee per student, payable to the instructor at the first class. SUMMER SESSION begins July 24. Class runs Tuesdays from 1-4pm for 4 weeks. $130 (member), $140 (non-member).

THE HEART OF THE MATTER: PERSONAL ESSAY WRITING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS with Sue Repko

Personal essays can be funny, angry, serious, full of despair, or full of questions. The main thing is to be honest on the page, to get to the heart of the matter. This is the kind of writing that sticks with us. In this class, students will create rough drafts and revise up to two essays suitable for college applications or just to hone their writing skills and meet other writers.  We will read some published essays and talk about what the writer did and whether or not he/she pulled it off. Writers at all levels and from all area high schools are welcome!

Sue Repko is a writer and urban planner, who founded the Positively!Pottstown blog. Her work has appeared in many online and print journals. She recently received her MFA in creative nonfiction from Bennington College.

SUMMER SESSION Begins July 10. Class runs Tuesdays from 6:30-9pm for 6 weeks. $140 (member), $150 (non-member).
